Crystal soil is not only a wonderful potting mix for decorating our home and office, but also has great practical use when mixed with soil in our container plants, as well as our outdoor gardens. These water absorbent polymer beads that are able to absorb and hold tens to hundreds of times its volume of water for a long time have a wide variety of uses in agriculture as well as home and garden applications.

Crystal Soil as Reservoir

With the characteristic of absorbing hundreds of times its weight in water for a long time, water absorbent polymer acts as a reservoir to store and release a steady stream of water to the plants even during periods of drought. When mixed in the soil, the water absorbent polymer will soften and swell as water is added and absorbed. When the potting system dries, the crystal soil beads will release its water to the plant.

Crystal Soil Improves Soil Aeration

The expansion and retraction of the crystal soil beads during watering cycle helps soil aeration, which is important to the growth of our plants.

Crystal Soil is Non-Toxic, Eco-friendly

Water absorbent polymeris made of non-toxic material. Hence, it is safe for our plants.

Crystal Soil is Economical

In addition, these crystal soil beads are economical to use for they are reusable and usually last several seasons. In addition, water absorbent polymer will reduce our irrigation needs and frequency in as much as 50% as well as retain our applied fertilizers and nutrients for plant use.

A few days ago, a friend asked me how often and how much should she water her plants when planting in crystal soil. I would say we should add water to the crystal beads whenever the beads shrink to around half of its size or to a size that cannot stably hold up the plants anymore.

I water my Buddhist pine whenever I see that too much of its roots is not covered by the crystal soil beads.

I just add more water and let the crystal soil beads absorb as much as they want. Then after some time (depends on the size of container), I will drain out the excess water to avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot problems and unpleasant odor.

After watered

Although crystal soil is suitable for many indoor houseplants, especially foliage plants, I wouldn’t recommend my friend to plant her herbs in crystal soil. This is because while most herb plants love sunlight, crystal soil is not suitable to leave under direct sunlight for a long period of time.

But if you want to grow a plant that needs lots of sunlight with crystal soil, you can cover the crystal beads with a dark cloth to avoid them from drying out too quickly. However, this may have defeated the decoration purpose in the first place.

Many plants that thrive in crystal soil are hydroculture plants. For example, many foliage plants that like shade and humidity are the most suitable to grow in crystal soil or to root in water. And here are some examples.

Plants such as cacti, succulents, and orchids are not recommended. And while some crystal soil suppliers say that bromeliad is suitable to be grown in crystal soil, it is a doubtful claim, for I have an impression that bromeliad doesn’t like as much water as the crystal soil provides.

Maybe let me experiment with it and tell you later

I bought this pot of palm for HKD 20 (around USD 2.50), and there were like 10 small palm plants

Before potting the plant in the garden container with crystal soil, I first needed to wash away the dirt and clean the roots of the plant. Check here to find out how to pot a plant with crystal soil.

I had to be extra careful when cleaning the roots of the nerve plants. The roots were very thin and holding onto the soil pretty tight. It took me quite some time and patience to free the roots from the dirt.

Here, let me show you how to pot a plant with crystal soil (aka soil moist).

Put a teaspoon of crystal soil into a container.

Add water and soak them for a few hours according to the instruction on the package. I always add more than enough water for I will drain any excess water with a strainer afterwards. If you use clear crystal soil and want some color crystal beads, you can add food coloring now.

Pour the crystal soil into a strainer and drain off any excess water

Both of these crystal soil beads are fully saturated. Their sizes are different because they are crystal soil of different brands. I mixed the two to pot my plants here.

Wash away the soil and clean the roots of the plant. Trim off roots that are too long. Do this gently to avoid from damaging the roots.

Put crystal soil into a container and gently insert your plant into the crystal soil.

The plant on the left is not potted with crystal soil, but only water, another easy way for growing plants. Check here to learn more about hydroculture.

Other Notes on Potting Plants with Crystal Soil

The plant that is newly potted into the crystal soil may grow slowly at first, for it needs some time to adjust to the new environment.

It is better to use fresh filtered or distilled water. The clearer and more purified the water, the more a crystal soil bead can absorb.

Add fresh water whenever you see the crystal soil beads shrink to half its size. If all the water has not been absorbed by the crystal soil after an hour, it has been overwatered. Drain out the excess water to avoid it from developing any unpleasant odor.

If the crystal soil looks dirty or smells bad, simply rinse them with tap water. Once they are clean and drained, they are ready for use again.

If your plant needs food, you can add liquid fertilizer when you water your plant.

Same as soil, these crystal soil beads hold up the plant and its root system, absorb and release water for the plant. But like hydroponics, it involves no dirt, is pest free, and easy in maintenance.

All plants need is water, air and nutrients. By using crystal soil and adding liquid fertilizer to the water when hydrating the crystals, your plants will be very happy and grow healthy. The crystal soil beads will absorb the water and liquid fertilizer, and release them together whenever the plant needs them.

While using crystal soil as a growing medium is quite common for gardeners in Hong Kong, it doesn’t seem so in other places, at least not the western countries. Yet, I would guess that the gardeners in other Asian countries, like Japan and Singapore, use crystal soil as a growing medium as well.

Here in Hong Kong, we have crystal soil in many colors. And, I have also seen it in shapes other than sphere.

What Plants are Suitable to Grow in Crystal Soil?

Many plants are suitable to grow in crystal soil, especially those that like humidity and don’t need full sunlight For examples, bamboo, pothos, arrowroot, amaryllis, spider plants, Chinese evergreen, palm, etc. While I have seen promotion photos of cactus in a crystal-soil-filled glass, I won’t try to grow cactus and succulents in crystal soil.

This is my latest tabletop garden – Ocean Breeze. Beneath the blue crystal soil is a layer of marble and stone.

We simply add a small amount of crystal soil (aka soil moist) into the potting soil. In this case, the crystal soil is a soil additive for potted plants. Crystal soil functions as a water storage that retains moisture around the plant’s roots, constantly nourishes the plant with water.

I have asked other gardeners in different gardening forums, and it seems that the gardeners in the U.S. (and probably in other western countries as well) uses crystal soil only as a soil additive. Unlike what we have in Hong Kong, crystal soil is only in one color and shape – plain off-white, round beads.

While crystal soil is helpful in protecting plants from drought, there is a caveat, it seems. If the potting soil has been dried out to a certain point, the crystal soil beads in the container may actually compete with the roots and suck the remaining moisture out of the soil, making the situation even worse.

Crystal soil (a.k.a. soil moist) is water absorbent polymer beads, which can absorb and hold up to 80-150 times of its volume of water for a long period of time. As a reservoir, crystal soil stores water and releases the water whenever the plant needs it.

Crystal soil can be used for potted plants, both indoor and outdoor. It is non-toxic, odor free, and environmentally safe. It appears that while gardeners around the world know crystal soil and use it as a soil additive for potted plants, only those in Asian countries use crystal soil alone as a beautiful growing medium in clear containers.
