Watering Plants in Crystal Soil

A  few days ago, a friend asked me how often and how much should she water her plants when planting in crystal soil.  I would say we should add water to the crystal beads whenever the beads shrink to around half of its size or to a size that cannot stably hold up the plants anymore.

I water my Buddhist pine whenever I see that too much of its roots is not covered by the crystal soil beads.

I just add more water and let the crystal soil beads absorb as much as they want.  Then after some time (depends on the size of container), I will drain out the excess water to avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot problems and unpleasant odor.

    Hello Sandy
I have really enjoyed reading your site!
I was looking for some advice on Coleus and have found a treasure trove of tips. I have a very small balcony and the room that gets the most sun in my house is the bathroom, so I am filling it up with greenery!
Your creative ideas have made me want to make some indoor gardens – I can see I am going to have my eyes skinned for moss everywhere I go this week…and I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of some crystal soil to try the hydroponics, because I constantly seem to need to buy potting mix for my balcony plants. Where does it all go?
Coincidentally I have had a dragon fruit sitting in my fridge for too long, probably not the best to eat, so I will not waste it, I will plant it!

There is nothing more encouraging and rewarding than knowing that someone enjoys the information I share in Cloud 9 so much. With its high humidity level, bathroom is a very suitable place to have a pot of moss, or crystal soil with some foliage plants. You can buy the colorful crystal soil in eBay I think 😉

      Happy Gardening!

    Thank you Sandy
I have now received my crystal soil and I am looking forward to experimenting with the plants you recommend. So far I have put some clear ones in a glass and it looks really pretty even before I have put a plant in it! I hope I will succeed with it because it is so much easier to find a suitable container, and much cleaner.
I haven’t found any moss yet – too busy this week – but I am looking forward to having a new incentive to walk through the park & get some good excercise at the same time.
Keep up the good work with your site, it is very interesting and so are the links.
